MICHIGAN CITY The 12th annual Womens Fair, presented by Indiana University Health La Porte Hospital was held on Tuesday at the Blue Chip Stardust Event Center.
Free screenings were provided by IU Health physicians and nurse practitioners throughout the event, offering preventative health measures to women and men.
These screenings, and the many other offerings at the fair, are provided to increase awareness and help our community get healthier, said Laura Gould, community outreach coordinator for IU Health.
Exams included screenings for oral cancer, hearing, bone density, posture and balance, blood glucose and blood pressure. Clinical breast exams were also performed. Flu and pneumonia vaccines were available for a charge.
The women are grateful because many dont have insurance, said Pam Hooper, wellness coordinator for IU Health. So this is a great opportunity to get the screenings.
Fair visitors waited in lines for the various screenings, some taking advantage of every offering, while others targeted specific exams, including Enriqueta Chu. She received tests for blood pressure and blood glucose as well as a breast exam.
While she has received exams in the past, she attended the Womens Fair in order to be examined by IU Health physicians. I heard (the fair) was sponsored by IU and I have always believed in IU, she said.
In addition to providing exams and screenings, the fair also aimed to provide education to the visitors regarding health and wellness in a fun environment.
We want people to have fun while living a healthy life, said Thor Thordarson, IU Health La Porte Hospital President and CEO, who stated the event aims to educate the community in regards to health.
For example, Thordarson stated that many women believe breast cancer is the primary health concern for women, rather than heart disease. Heart issues represent themselves differently in men and women, he said. Women need to be aware of the risk factors.
Several local businesses and agencies attended the fair, offering information, gifts and services to visitors. For example, the La Porte County Family YMCA attended the fair to promote health and wellness.
This is a great opportunity to talk to people about our mission, said Vanessa Maher, marketing director, stating that the mission is to build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
Alicks Home Medical Equipment, Inc. displayed items from their womens line, including a variety of breast prosthetics such as contact prosthetics, which adhere directly to the skin. Also on display were prosthetic bras.
According to Jen Johnson, marketing and sales representative, prosthetic breasts are offered in a variety of sizes and are custom fit during appointments at Alicks.
Rassel Family Chiropractic Center offered free five minute massages and allowed those interested to schedule an appointment for a free X-ray and new patient exam.
A popular feature of the fair was the AmeriBreast, an interactive, inflatable human breast. While walking through the breast, visitors learned about the internal workings of a healthy breast and were also educated about breast cancer.
A 10-minute spin class was demonstrated by instructor Kayla Golden. Spin classes are offered by IU Health at The Crossing, a rehabilitation and wellness center on Washington Street in La Porte.
A feature presentation, The Surprising New News about Menopause Hormone Therapy, was presented by Dr. Lovera Miller.

How Can I Get Healthy? -Health Tips? This year, I made it a point to become healthy. I have lost some weight and got rid of some acne.
I really want to be healthy, and make sure that I look healthy.
Can you give me some all over health tips?
Im a teen girl by the way.
Hey,
The best advice I can give you is exercise daily and eat well. Eat at least 5 portions of fruit or vegetables a day. Try to cut out as much sugar and snacks as you can manage. Drink plenty of water. Exercise for about 30 minutes a day, remember this does not have to be running a million miles and lifting 10 ton weights. Walking is an excellent form of exercise and is great because you can walk briskly around shops whilst looking at really cute outfits!
I hope this helps!

What Are Some Basic Tips To Give To Kids About Staying Healthy? I’m trying to teach my 6 year old nephew how to stay healthy. I need tips from eating right, to being active and maintaining hygiene. Any health tips you expect a 6 yr old kid to understand.
You should tell them to eat lots of smaller meals and to eat slowly so that their bodies are more able to recognize when they are full. Also its important to drink lots of water and fruit juice rather than soda. Try and encourage him to stay away from junk food and eat fruit or something healthy when he wants a snack. Also teach him to be active, that playing sports and running around is good for you as well as fun. Also teach him the basics of hygiene like showering daily and brushing his teeth 3 times a day. Try and make it all fun for him though, as kids respond more to things that they find enjoyable.

Unfortunately there are no easy ways to permanently lose weight and most people who lose weight regain it all.
A vegetarian or vegan diet for the rest of your life might perhaps be a good option as very few vegetarians or vegans are overweight.
If you want a life changing permanent weight loss you need to follow a maintenance diet for the rest of your life after you reach your target weight with one of the many diets you can choose from.
