DENISON, TX— When it comes to loosing weight it seems like there are hundreds of tips and tricks for shedding some pounds, but now local health experts are saying what you think is helping may actually be hurting. 

Denison dietician Tori Park says many people who come to her think skipping meals is a good way to lose weight, but she says when you starve yourself you are actually slowing down your metabolism and depriving your body of energy. She also says not all carbohydrates are bad.

“Fruits and vegetables, which are loaded with vitamins and minerals, are really good for you,” Park said. “Your body will use them very easily and appropriately, but if you eat something like a candy bar or drink a soda your body doesn’t need it.”

She say when your body doesn’t need it, it stores the extra calories as fat.

Park also says that a Diet Cokes isn’t any healthier for you then a regular coke. In fact, she says it might be worse and that studies have shown that the aspartame in Diet Coke has been known to cause dizziness and headaches in some cases.
