West Rockhill >> Get Fit with a Doc will give you tips on how to improve your health, but thats just the beginning.
The doctors and other health professionals leading the program will also walk right alongside you while youre doing it.
We want to work with community members and our patients and help them live healthy lifestyles, said Diane Roberts, physician liaison in Grand View Healths medical administration offices and co-chair, with Dr. Miroslawa Jablonski-Cohen, of Get Fit with a Doc.
The program will be held in West Rockhills James Memorial Park on Ridge Road.
In a letter to West Rockhill officials, Get Fit with a Doc was described as having an informal educational presentation for about five minutes followed by walks. Each of the Get Fit with a Doc events, which will be free to the public, will last between a half hour and an hour, according to the letter.
Topics covered could be things such as how to stretch properly, controlling blood pressure, nutrition or cardiovascular health, Roberts said.
Along with a doctor, there will also be at least one other Grand View staff member at each of the walks, she said.
The first of the walks is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday, April 18. Dates and times and other information about the walks, including registration information, will be posted in the events section at www.gvh.org[1], Roberts said.
Participants can walk whatever distance is comfortable for them, she said. Some might lap the trail while others just go from one bench to another, she said.
Theres plenty of benches, Roberts said, so if people get tired, they can just sit down. Continued…[2]
The walkers will then be encouraged to go a little further in subsequent walks, she said.
We want to give them goals and try to help them improve their health, Roberts said.
Initial plans are to have Get Fit with a Doc twice a month, but that may increase, she said.
Participants will also be encouraged to follow up with walks of their own or with other groups, she said.
Local companies could have teams of participants, she said.
The walks are open to anyone in the community, not just Grand View patients, she said.
The park will remain open for other users at the same time Get Fit with a Doc is happening, she said.
After getting information about the program from the letter, the West Rockhill Township Board of Supervisors agreed Dec. 17 to allow Get Fit with a Doc to use the park.
I think its a good idea, board member Jay Keyser said.
I do as well, board member John Mann said. Continued…[3]

The park is near Grand Views hospital on Lawn Avenue.
Its convenient, Roberts said. Its a beautiful little park.
As the participants increase the amount they walk, there will be new goals and could be other offshoots, she said.
Maybe well all go run a 5K together, Roberts said. The whole goal is to help the community Grand View serves get healthy.
