Process that affects fat distribution, metabolic syndrome found by researchers

Building upon their earlier research on the biology of fat metabolism, Joslin scientists discovered that microRNAs -small RNA molecules that play important roles in regulation in many types of tissue — play a major role in the distribution and determination of fat cells and whole body metabolism. Also, the study is the first to reveal that microRNAs (miRNAs) influence the development of lipodystrophy (abnormal fat accumulation) which affects many people with HIV receiving anti-retroviral therapy. The findings appear in the August issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation.

Previous Joslin studies have demonstrated that fat cells (adipocytes) have functions far beyond fat storage: they secrete substances that actively influence metabolism and are also a site of systemic inflammation leading to insulin resistance. The body has two types of fat — the more common white adipose fat (WAT), which stores fat; and brown adipose fat (BAT), which burns fat to produce heat. BAT plays a beneficial role in regulating body weight and metabolism, which has generated considerable interest among scientists and pharmaceutical companies looking for treatments for obesity. Excess WAT, on the other hand, especially in the intra-abdominal area, is associated with metabolic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes.

In the current study, Joslin scientists were interested in learning more about miRNAs and their role in the creation of fat cells and the function of brown and white fat. Earlier Joslin research revealed that with aging, miRNA processing in fat tissue decreases due to a decrease in Dicer, a critical enzyme that converts pre-miRNAs to mature miRNAs.

Using a mouse model in which expression of Dicer was specifically knocked out in fat tissue, the researchers found that mice that lacked Dicer in fat developed abnormal fat distribution resembling HIV-related lipodystrophy (which is associated with antiviral treatment). In mice, this form of lipodystrophy was also characterized by “whitening” of brown fat cells, a loss of white fat, and signs of metabolic syndrome, including insulin resistance, fat tissue inflammation, dyslipidemia (elevated cholesterol and fat), increased resting energy use, and increased markers of cardiovascular disease.

The researchers also found lower Dicer levels in the fat tissue of patients with HIV and HIV-related lipodystrophy, suggesting that low levels of Dicer expression in fat in HIV patients may contribute to the development of this syndrome, a complication which limits therapy in some people with HIV.

Together, these findings indicate an essential role for Dicer and miRNA processing in white and brown cell differentiation and whole body metabolism that may contribute to the development of HIV-related lipodystrophy. “It’s good to build on our previous research on miRNA processing and Dicer in aging and find that a decline in Dicer may also play an important role in HIV lipodystrophy by dramatically changing the biology of fat and the tendency towards diabetes and metabolic syndrome,” says lead author C. Ronald Kahn, MD, Chief Academic Officer at Joslin Diabetes Center and the Mary

I recently received this product and I have read the other reviews. First of all, the other reviews have legitimate complaints about the fulfillment, and if you read the replies, “Blake” who is the founder and the person that does one of the shows on liveexercise.com (a free value-added service of this company), acknowledges the errors and corrects the mistakes. What more can you want from the customer service side of things? From a product standpoint, this set along with the other sets this company makes are the best quality home-use bands I have ever used. If you take the bands alone and follow the instructions and exercises in the booklet, you will succeed and this product will deliver everything this company claims. However, if you are reading this at home, you have Internet access. So, that means you have access to liveexercise.com, a website of Bodylastics. There are LIVE or archived FREE workouts at this site, worth multiple times what you paid for the product and I don’t think this company does a very good job touting what all you get for your money when investing in this exercise product. It is disappointing that there have been fulfillment problems recently, but from what I can tell, it is because the company made some product adjustments and didn’t coordinate their distribution outlets in displaying the deliverables. I am sure Blake has done double workouts to scold himself over that misstep, because quite frankly, I am a long time Amazon Prime client and this product is a 5-Star product, hands down. I hope that everybody giving it less of a rating, upon receiving the missing pieces and reviewing the entire product — resistance bands, handles, anchors, and live workouts (how to make the most out of your bands!), edits their initial “total” rating accordingly. Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
This review is from: Bodylastics 12 pcs Snap Guard Resistance Bands Set with 5 Stackable anti-snap exercise tubes, Heavy Duty components, carrying case, massive 3×4 ft. Wall Chart and FREE 3 month access to over 2000 full length resistance bands workout videos, from Pilates to MMA (Misc.)
If you already workout regularly and want to add resistance bands to your options, then these are a fantastic choice. Unlike cheap bands at a big box store, these feel like real, professional quality equipment. The hook and handle system is easier to use than you would expect and in fact makes for great versatility in how you can use the bands. You do need a door. But unless you live in a yurt, you probably have at least one good one. (I live in a one bedroom apartment and use the front door.)

If you are new to exercising and looking for a magic bullet, understand that no such thing exists. A good set of resistance bands will help tremendously, but you will also need to dedicate yourself and make exercising and eating well a priority in your daily life. Resistance bands are a better first choice of equipment than, say, a big pink exercise ball or some sort of ab-rocking chair contraption, but eventually you will want to expand your options for the best all-around fitness. A set of adjustable dumbbells will be nice, and eventually, yes, a big pink exercise ball is helpful too. (The ab-rocking chair contraption, however, will never be a good choice.) Ultimately, you will want to do a variety of workouts with and without equipment. Resistance bands, weights, bodyweight exercises all work and have their various purposes and advantages. And when it comes to resistance bands I don’t know of a better choice than these.

And when it comes to structuring your routines, Bodylastics provides one of the most amazing services that is totally opposite from how most folks in the fitness industry work–Liveexercise.com. This website gives you a new routine just about daily for free. And they don’t try to upsell you on anything–they don’t try to convince you to upgrade your equipment, or buy some super-premium DVD, or put in a monthly order for some sort of energy shake. They just offer a variety of workouts for a variety of fitness goals–all new, every day. It’s all for free and I don’t understand why they do it. I’ve been aware of them since Liveexercise appeared on my Roku box a couple months ago, and I’ve been doing the “Chisled” and yoga routines for about two weeks and I’m still waiting for the catch. Amazing. (Maybe the catch is that I buy their bands and write a 5-star review on Amazon, but that can’t be all, right?)

Bodylastics Resistance Bands, May 15, 2013
This review is from: Bodylastics 12 pcs Snap Guard Resistance Bands Set with 5 Stackable anti-snap exercise tubes, Heavy Duty components, carrying case, massive 3×4 ft. Wall Chart and FREE 3 month access to over 2000 full length resistance bands workout videos, from Pilates to MMA (Misc.)
First off I do not work nor am I an investor for this product so my review is that of only a consumer user. These exercise bands are the best. Having hate gyms because I find them dirty, sweaty, filled with people, sometimes overpriced, and filled with germs so I tend to use my own exercise equipment especially for weight workouts. I’ve been into exercising/fitness since a teenage. I’ve been using Bodylastic bands on/off since late 2006, and if you follow the work outs (or create yours) and use them like a reasonable adult than you’ll be amazed. There’s different set packages however I recommend investing a bit of more money and getting the 13 piece (totaling 96LBS of bands) set like I have or even higher with the 28 piece (328LBS) set especially since once you start using them you’ll only want to use them more and work your way up to higher band weights. You want a least one black (19LBS) and purple (23LB) band in your package to mix with the lower weight bands for when your muscles become stronger. You can later on buy separate bands or another kit to add to it the bands you already have for higher weight goals. The first set I bought in 2006 two of the lower weight bands broke over time (3LB yellow, and 5LB green), but I noticed when I bought my second set in 2008 they fixed that and the bands are pretty sturdy. I used the bands into November 2012 when they started to wear a bit. Five years of constant almost every other day use. I gave the old ones to a relative, and bought myself a new set. One month later I bought a second set so I could have more of the 23LB weight bands and could mix and match bands for higher weight strengthening. That’s how satisfied I have been with Bodylastics. By 2013 it seems they mastered it and quality wise I can’t see them breaking as they seem sturdy as sturdy gets in craftsmanship. This is a product that seems to get better with time and any flaws are iron out and have evolved a lot since 2006. The bands are as heavy duty sturdy as bands can get and I can take a lot of heavy use along with take them anywhere even to work if I wanted too unlike regular barbell weights. I would say THE BEST even better than free barbell weights (except you can’t do bench chest pressing of course). I’ve seen rip-off cheap bands, and other band style kits sold at Wal-Mart (for more money oddly enough) and the sturdiness do not compare at all. Even the hooks and handles are sturdy on this product. Bodylastics take their exercise bands seriously and are more focused on giving the consumer a good weight and heavy duty muscle workout along with craftsmanship without having to show off some fake celebrity on a crappy product, no silly infomercials, and no need for some weight guru “claiming” it works. Bodylastics lets these exercise bands speak and work for themselves which they do. Plus you can buy additional bands or replace bands through the company and their extremely helpful. The only flaw in this package is the black nylon carrying bad that they give you to store all your bands and pieces. It’s too small so you won’t be able to really store more than two bands in it along with the handles and other pieces. But who needs bags anyhow as you can use anything to store them in. I store them in my draws, and if need to them for travel throw them in a small cheap duffle bag. Follow the instructions (you can also find other exercise techniques online), watch the DVD, and use them like a reasonable mature adult and you’ll be amazingly satisfied and won’t feel like you got some cheaply made bands. Highest quality I’ve seen yet in bands. Five out of five stars. I guess that’s why most reviewers are giving Bodylastics four to five stars!
