New form of treatment to reduce risk of surgery-related ischemic brain injury?

Ischemic brain injury due to heart and vascular surgery cause more than 100,000 deaths annually in Europe and the United States. In addition, approximately 10-20% of patients undergoing heart and vascular surgery — at least 1.5 million people in Europe and the United States every year — suffer from ischemic brain injury as a side-effect of their surgery.

Researchers from the Institute of Biotechnology at the University of Helsinki, Finland, have found that water-only fasting or protein-free diet before stroke reduce the amount of damaged brain tissue in rats by nearly 40%.

Academy Research Fellow Jaan-Olle Andressoo notes that reducing brain damage caused by surgery, some of which results in what are known as “silent strokes,” would be extremely important. A silent stroke, often left undiagnosed, may disrupt the brain’s capacity to process information. Patients may experience cognitive difficulties after heart surgery, e.g. find that they can no longer complete everyday tasks as easily as before.

“Minimising brain damage is the main target of our research, and we are now seeking partners to enable us to test the pre-surgery diets on patient groups.”

Academy Research Fellow Kaisa Hartikainen, a neurologist at the Behavioural Neurology Research Unit at the Tampere University Hospital, considers the findings interesting.

“Despite an enormous amount of research in recent years into treatments and drugs that could protect neurons from irreversible damage caused by oxygen deprivation, neuroprotective treatments have largely proved ineffective in stroke patients. Results from short-term dietary restriction studies on rats, however, offer a promising new alternative for use in conjunction with surgical treatments associated with a significant risk for stroke.

You guys would not believe what i saw in my dream today. Branch Warren was
a trainer and agent of Kai Greene. Phil Heath had blonde hair and a
moustache. And some media were gonna start interviewing them (Kai Greene
and Phil Heath). And Phil was breaking some chair in the sets because he
was angry. And Branch was telling Kai that he has to go on the set cause
this is good money. As soon as the camera rolls both of them were the most
    innocent guys ever.

honestly I am a bodybuilder, 20yrs old, 5’11, 259 @ 10% bodyfat and will be competing next year to earn my pro card. The “myth” you hear about it stunting your growth is absolutely bogus, dont believe me? go ask an endocrinologist. I began lifting at 13yrs old and both of my parents are 5’7 but yet im 5’11 1/2″. Your body from ages 12-22 are when natural testosterone levels and growth hormone levels are at their highest which is ideal for muscle growth. I will give you the best advice that money can buy. Train each muscle once a week, eat high calories(not junk), do cardio, and never forget your goals. For someone your age here’s how I would do it:

    Monday/Thursday: Chest + Biceps + Triceps
    Bench Press 3sets X 10repetitions
    Dumbbell Flys 3 X 10
Pushups 3 X as many as you can
    Dumbbell Curls 3 X 8
    EZ Bar Curls 3 X 8
    Dips 3 X bodyweight

    Tuesday/Friday: Back + Shoulders + Legs
    Lat Pull-downs 3 X 10
    Seated Cable Rows 3 X 8
    Dumbbell Shoulder Press 3 X 10
    Shrugs 3 X 10
    Leg Press 3 X 10
    Calve Raises 3 X 10

***make sure you do some crunches on all lifting days to develop a solid core, as well as doing 30minutes of cardio after your workout on lifting days***

The keys to building quality muscle are EATING, TRAINING HARD, AND SLEEP. Don’t fall a victim to steroids in high school as they are usually readily availible, that is my honest advise to you because you have no idea how badly it will mess with your body in the long run if taken at an improper age. It’s great to see kids like you interested in bodybuilding. If you really want to gather a great amount of information go to bodybuilding.com and go to the forum section. It offers everything imaginable. GOOD LUCK!

If your 12 I’m guessing its probably not a good idea to start bodybuilding right now because you body is not fully matured yet, but you can still exercise regularly to keep in shape!
