Men have been losing the losing game.
As a nation, our fastest-growing health problem is our fast-growing waistlines. And a gap has grown between women, who have enthusiastically and publicly embraced all manner of diets, regimens and weight-loss merchants, and men. Men dont want to talk about excess fat, and their need to lose it.
Perhapsit’s because so much societal pressure is put on females to conform to the supermodel ideal. Perhaps it’s because women, in their roles as caregiver and domestic engineer, are naturally more attuned to the dictates of proper nutrition. For whatever reason, women are much more likely to reach out for help with losing weight, and to be frank about the issue.Into this gap between men and women seeking a better weight has stepped Charles Barkley. The former NBA star, once known as the “round mound of rebound,” has become a spokesperson for the Weight Watchers “Lose Like a Man” campaign. As part of the effort, he cut a commercial in dressed in drag, a big black man in a little black dress.”Men talk about a lot of things. Being fat ain’t one of them,” said Barkley in televised comments, explaining why he thinks men are less likely to sign up for weight loss groups.
Calls to Weight Watchers go to a national call center, and representatives refused to give a name or number for any local leaders. Calls to the Weight Watchers corporate office in Jericho, N.Y., were not returned.
Many of the “name-brand” weight loss companies, including Jenny Craig and Nutrisystem, also route telephone calls to phone banks. Some local practitioners, though, were willing to speak about men and dieting.
Joseph Lang, M.D., operates the Island Diet Center on Marco Island. Despite the “diet center” name, he emphasized that to be successful, a program must take a holistic approach, and consider every aspect of diet, nutrition and exercise.
“You can’t exercise away a bad diet, and you can’t correct hormonal imbalance with just diet. It all has to work together,” he said.
One particular challenge men face, said Lang, relates to that hormonal imbalance.
“When someone gains extra weight, their body starts converting testosterone to estrogen. More estrogen causes more fat. Unless you correct all of it, you’re spinning your wheels.” More body fat, he added, also allows the body to store more of the chemicals, many of them toxic, with which our environment is loaded.
“What we’re interested in is healthy aging, and overweight is counter to healthy aging,” said Lang.
Glenn Burkett, whose Glenn Burkett Corp. has two offices in Naples and one in Fort Myers, is not a doctor, but has passionate beliefs about nutrition, body chemistry and their key role in health.
“Men get interested in weight loss only when they’re scared into it,” he said. “With women, it’s often a cosmetic issue, but men don’t get serious until they have disease issues. Maybe they’re coming down with diabetes, or have high blood pressure.”
Often, said Burkett, men are dragged into his program by their wives.
“Sometimes women come in. Then they come back with their husbands.”
Women, he said, are more disciplined. “I can tell a woman, ‘Follow this for 30 days.’ Men have to see results in seven days.”
While Lang’s male patients uniformly declined to go public with their weight loss histories, Burkett had numerous men willing to speak out. In fact, this is a staple of his advertising, featuring television infomercials, with successful “losers” telling their stories on-camera.
David Tague, 48, of Naples, said, “I was flipping channels and saw Glenn’s program. I weighed in this morning at 226. Seven weeks ago I was 259. It wasn’t about losing weight, it was about feeling better.”
He had previously lost weight on the Atkins diet, he said, but bounced right back.
“Now, I eat eggs, steak, chicken without antibiotics. I’m taking in belt loops.”
Like several of Burkett’s male patients, he showed off the old notches on his belt.
“I feel like I’ve taken 20 years off my life,” said Phil Morlock, 74, of Naples, who was brought to Burkett’s clinic by his wife, Iris. “My doctor said, ‘Whatever you’re doing, you’re doing good. Keep it up.’ ”
Lang and Burkett both believe in the efficacy of nutritional supplements, including probiotics, to achieve proper hormonal balance, which is equally true for males and females. And they agreed men have one key advantage over women when it comes to shedding pounds.
“Men lose weight easier,” said Lang.
“They have the muscle mass to burn calories, so they can see the number drop,” said Burkett.

If you want to lose weight, the best way is by diet and cardio. Dieting is eating less and eating healthier. Cardio is a type of exercise that raises your heart rate. Diet, which lowers your calorie intake and cardio which burns extra calories.
If you want to go on a diet, you must reduce the amount you eat and change what you do eat to something healthy and nutritious. Begin by not eating more then 1500 calories a day. This will ensure you dont take over the amount of calories which will increase body fat.
For cardio, the best is using elliptical machines. I recommend this rather then a treadmill because after doing some testing, elliptical trainers burn twice the amount of calories you burn on a treadmill. I would use it for 30 minutes daily. If you cant afford either one, then just jog or walk outside every night.

Trying to reduce unwanted weight and belly fat has not really been easy with some people due to their body composition, but with determination and following the weight loss and belly program, you will be able to achieve your desired result. Bear in mind that its a gradual process. You cannot achieve it just immediately but doing what you are supposed to do will lead to positive result.
All you need to do is to discipline yourself. Its very important. Eat balanced diet but eat when you are hungry. Try and eat fruits, vegetables and drink more water. Also, try to reduce fatty food going into your system, reduce sugar intake, soda, chocolate, ice cream, etc.
Do regular exercise either in the house or outside. Fit in your exercise time into your daily schedule. If it means waking up early, do so that you can exercise your body. You can stomach exercise continuously and your belly fat will come down.
