LOS ANGELES–(BUSINESS WIRE)–
The Health Net Foundation, a subsidiary of Health Net, Inc.[1], is providing $175,000 in grants to 12 California school-based health centers and community medical clinics to further their efforts in helping prevent childhood and adult dental problems.
Dental care has medical consequences, said Patricia Clarey, president of the Health Net Foundation. These grants are intended to enhance the dental care experience, improve access to dental services and provide dental health education for special needs populations like adults with diabetes, pregnant women and children up to age 3.
The importance of the programs these grants will support is clear, said Sean OBrien, director of Dental Operations for Health Net of California, Inc. Poor oral health has been linked to heart and lung disease, diabetes, stroke, extremely high birth weight and premature births, and we are hoping the efforts of these health centers and clinics will help prevent those outcomes.

Dental Health Tips
To combat oral health problems, Health Net offers these tips:
- Brush your teeth at least two times daily: after breakfast and before bedtime. Another good time is after eating snacks.
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Brush the top and side surfaces of your teeth. Make sure to also brush at the gumline to get rid of plaque.
- Get a new toothbrush every three months. An old toothbrush will not clean your teeth thoroughly.
- Floss at least once per day to help remove plaque from between the teeth and gumline.
- See your dentist at least twice a year to get your teeth checked and cleaned.
- Go to your dentist right away if you have any pain or notice a bad flavor in your mouth when youre not eating.
- Cut down on foods and drinks high in acid, such as soda. High acid can erode the outer surface of your teeth.
- Dont smoke. It stains your teeth, causes bad breath and increases your risk of getting tooth disease and oral cancer.
