Children’s preferences for sweeter and saltier tastes are linked to each other and to measures of growth

Scientists from the Monell Chemical Senses Center have found that children who most prefer high levels of sweet tastes also most prefer high levels of salt taste and that, in general, children prefer sweeter and saltier tastes than do adults. These preferences relate not only to food intake but also to measures of growth and can have important implications for efforts to change children’s diets.

Many illnesses of modern society are related to poor food choices. Because children consume far more sugar and salt than recommended, which contributes to poor health, understanding the biology behind children’s preferences for these tastes is a crucial first step to reducing their intake.

“Our research shows that the liking of salty and sweet tastes reflects in part the biology of the child,” said study lead author Julie Mennella, PhD, a biopsychologist at Monell. Biology predisposes us to like and consume calorie-rich sweet foods and sodium-rich salty foods, and this is especially true for children. “Growing children’s heightened preferences for sweet and salty tastes make them more vulnerable to the modern diet, which differs from the diet of our past, when salt and sugars were once rare and expensive commodities.”

In the study, published online at PLOS ONE, Mennella and colleagues tested 108 children between 5 and 10 years old, and their mothers, for salt and sweet taste preferences. The same testing method was used for both children and their mothers, who tasted broth and crackers that varied in salt content, and sugar water and jellies that varied in sugar content. The method, developed by Mennella and her colleagues at Monell, scientifically determines taste preferences, even for very young children, by having them compare two different levels of a taste, pick their favorite, and then compare that favorite with another, over and again until the most favorite is identified.

Mennella and colleagues also had mothers and children list foods and beverages they consumed in the past 24 hours, from which daily sodium, calorie, and added sugar intakes were estimated. Subjects then gave a saliva sample, which was genotyped for a sweet receptor gene, and a urine sample to measure levels of Ntx, a marker for bone growth. Weight, height, and percent body fat were measured for all subjects.

Analyses of all these data showed that not only were sweet and salty preferences correlated in children, and higher overall than those in adults, but also children’s taste preferences related to measures of growth and development: children who were tall for their age preferred sweeter solutions, and children with higher amounts of body fat preferred saltier soups. There was also some indication that higher sweet liking related to spurts in bone growth, but that result needs confirmation in a larger group of children.

Sweet and salty preferences were correlated in adults as well. And in adults, but not in children, sweet receptor genotype was related to the most preferred level of

Brad you were FLYING on that first round! Were those blue shoes helping you
reach the sky? It would be nice if you could include the shoes you wear, if
    they are available in stores/online.
Love the vid, but I’m going to try 10 sec of the advanced versions and 10
sec of the beginner version, since I am at neither level. Great Tabata work
    out as usual.
    Thank you for sharing!

5-Star Preworkout, Worth Every Penny, January 24, 2014

For the last year or so, I’ve really educated myself on weight training & committed to a cleaner lifestyle & diet. My main nemesis has been artificial sweeteners & dyes, so I switched to a natural Whey & I’ve been looking for a pre-workout. EVERYTHING out there is loaded with aspartame, Red #40, “artificial flavors”, “proprietary blends”… I like to know what I’m putting in my body, so I stuck with black coffee for early morning workouts. I discovered MFL/Mike Matthews 5 months ago & bought his supplements as soon as they came out. It costs a little more, but it’s worth it for the peace of mind in knowing that the ingredients are clean & science-based.

I didn’t know exactly what to expect from a pre-workout, so I started with 1 scoop & worked up to 2. The beta-alanine gave me a tingly, itchy sensation in my hands but it’s starting to subside after 6 weeks. It tastes awesome (like fruit punch to me), mixes with water just fine for me, & I’ve cut way back on my coffee intake which should be great for my teeth 🙂 It doesn’t kick in or stop all at once (not sure of the biological terms there), takes about 10min to start working for me (I’m 5’6″/135), gives me a great extra edge to power through, I can still sleep at night, & my lifts have gone up every week. My focus is incredible. If I take a full 2 scoops, I swear time slows down. I time my rest periods at 60-90sec, so I’ll think it’s almost time for another set, look at the clock, & only 10 seconds have passed. It’s physics-defying!!

Extremely satisfied with the product so far. I read his book and was impressed by his knowledge, desire to help others, and especially his evidence based research. The evidence based research and willingness to explain his reasoning is huge to me. I graduated with a bachelors in human nutrition, foods, and exercise and I am currently in a doctoral program for physical therapy. I also am an avid reader/ researcher on many training/ nutrition/ human body topics and I have read a ton of literature that he used in his book and agree with almost everything he says. I apologize if I come off as a jerk by giving my background, I just figured that some might want to know more about the person reviewing the products. As far as the company and man behind the product, I have much respect for the way he explains his logic and the way he runs his business.

In regards to the supplement alone, the container is filled to the brim. More than any other supplement I have ever bought. The taste is pretty good. The fruit punch tastes like any other fruit punch product. Nothing i would want to drink with dinner, but definitely above par for the supplement world. It kicks in within 20-30 minutes and it honestly does exactly what they say. I take about a scoop and a half and feel amazing during my workouts. I get the itchy face during the beginning which I don’t mind and I would say that it isn’t anything that would bother most people who might buy the product. Absolutely no crash afterwards and honestly I feel like my stamina has increased as well. I took his advice and have been stacking it with the ON Creatine. In conclusion, I have been making excellent gains in the past month or so, and I would definitely definitely recommend someone trying this product. Worth every penny and I plan on buying another container once I run out. Hope this helps anyone on the fence.
