Celebrity trainer Simone De La Rue. (Handout)

Simone De La Rue has no clue how much she weighs.
The 38-year-old Aussie trainer to the stars says she hasnt stepped on a scale in about a decade. De La Rue had her fill of mandatory weigh-ins as a young girl in ballet school.
We had to stand on the scales once a week and if we put on half a pound, we got into trouble, she tells Sun Media in a phone interview from Los Angeles.
That mentality is so unhealthy for women. Depending on what time of the month it is or how much water you drank, you could be carrying up to seven pounds more.
De La Rue, a five-foot-four blonde with seemingly boundless energy, would much rather gauge her fitness by other means, including how she feels in her clothes. And thats how she treats her clients, too.
We take measurements, but we dont step on scales, she says.
Yup, forget about fretting over numbers. The former Broadway dancer focuses on keeping her clientele motivated while making their workouts fun.
Youve got to make fitness fun, she notes. To do that, De La Rue draws from her background as a classically trained dancer.
I never actually used equipment in a gym. I never ran or cycled, she explains.
For me, I try to bring dance into the world of fitness. A lot of my clientele are female. At some point in a womans life, everyone has had the experience of dance or wanted to dance or wanted to be a dancer. Theres also a spiritual and emotional side with it as well, like just letting go and dancing with abandonment. I think everyone is able to connect to that.
During her dance career, De La Rue studied yoga and Pilates, which she credits for helping her to develop exceptional core strength and long, lean muscle – and stave off injuries.
She has combined those disciplines at her New York City studio called Body By Simone (bodybysimonetv.com) – or BBS for short – to create a variety of kick-butt classes and one-on-one workouts delivered by De La Rue and her team of fitness experts.
A signature $35 class at BBS is basically 45 minutes of dance cardio, she explains, dancing around, getting your heart rate up.
Meanwhile, the one-on-one training ($175 for a private session) is based on the same dance-yoga-Pilates fusion that helped keep De La Rue amazingly injury-free throughout her 20-plus years onstage.
And she doesnt just bark orders or crack the whip.
I train alongside my clients, she says. Thats the way of motivating them and keeping them inspired and giving them that feeling of working out with a companion.
De La Rue trains one to six clients per day, So at the end of the day, I really dont have the energy to do anything for myself – nor do I really need to, she adds.
Among her list of famous clients are Hollywood heavy-hitters Sandra Bullock, Anne Hathaway, Naomi Watts and Matt Damon. Celebrities, says De La Rue, have the financial wherewithal to focus on fitness. But the differences between them and the rest of us poor schlubs end there.
At the end of the day, they sweat, they complain and theyre not motivated some days, De La Rue says. Theyre just the same as anybody else.
No matter who you are, the keys to fitness success include setting realistic goals and working out first thing in the morning, says to De La Rue.
If you can get exercise done in the morning, try to get it out of the way. By the afternoon or evening, youre going to be less motivated, advises the self-admitted chocoholic who follows a relatively clean high-protein diet.
The endorphins kick in and that natural high that you feel will take you through the rest of the day.
And remember, dont step on the scale.
- Stay off the scale.
- Dont be too hard on yourself.
- Set realistic goals.
- Maintain balance in your life.
- Be happy with yourself.
- Just keep moving.
